Codex Atlanticus, folio 855r

Swing Bridge

It is among Leonardo's most futuristic projects. It was designed in the context of urban planning studies that involved the construction of new settlements over a network of canals destined to be used for sewage and transportation purposes.

Using a complex system of winches and wheels, the bridge rotated 90 degrees, allowing the passage of boats or the isolation of canal banks for defensive purposes.
To prevent the collapse of the construction during opening and closing operations, Leonardo includes the installation of a counterweight, thanks to which the equilibrium of the structure is assured during the whole operation.
