Codex Atlanticus, folio 1078r

Hydraulic Saw

The combination of the hydraulic motor with the crank connecting rod device allowed the automation of the movement of the working machines.

Leonardo's model, derived from Francesco di Giorgio, is equipped with a special holding device that keeps the workpiece close to the blade during cutting.
The earliest drawing of a hydraulic saw is found in the notebook of medieval architect-engineer Villard de Honnecourt (1270).
