Manuscript B, folio 23r

Double-deck Bridge

This design, shown on Manuscript B, is related to Leonardo's architectural research carried out between 1487 and 1489.

The two-level bridge solution allows the crossing of a waterway on two different levels and makes possible to split the traffic flows in different directions. Or it can be designed to assign the upper level to crosswalk and the lower to vehicle and animal use.
The design of this bridge is also significant for the attempt to optimize the structure of the beams, achieved by placing a walkway on the lower end and the other on crossbeams placed on the intersections of the inclined posts.
