Manuscript B, folio 9v

Scythe Ship

On folio 9v of Manuscript B Leonardo draws a scythe-equipped warship, inspired by Roman warships.

These vessels were used to cut rigging and masts of enemy ships. Leonardo also notes that once the rigging was cut, the sails would fall over the enemies, preventing them from defending themselves effectively.
The scythe can be placed vertically or horizontally, and a large weight at its end allows it to rotate if vertical or balance its weight if horizontal.
