Codex Atlanticus, folio 754r

Time regulator

Leonardo designed an unprecedented clock mechanism that oscillated slowly in an alternating motion to trigger the escapement mechanism.

The movement of the device is similar to that of a pendulum, a mechanical element whose laws would only be understood in the following century, contributing to the refinement of time measurement.
In mechanical clocks, the escapement is the mechanism that controls the descent of a weight, slowing it down and dividing its movement into equal intervals.
