Madrid Codex I, folio 27v

Clock

This clock could be installed at the top of a tower and programmed to chime every hour. The large front wheel has twelve indentations, one for each hour of the day.

Inside the frame are two weights that make the clock operate: one powers the time-measuring mechanism, and the other activates the hammer that strikes the bell.
The drawing on the back of page 27 of the Madrid Codex looks like an engineering blueprint. Most of the gear mechanisms are shown in cross-section and each gear is labelled with a letter and the number of its teeth.
