The Equestrian Monument to Francesco Sforza

Great Horse

One of the biggest and most important projects that ever occupied Leonardo was the Equestrian Monument to Francesco Sforza, the father of Duke Ludovico Sforza of Milan.

Leonardo moved to Milan in service of the duke, and between working on celebrations, war-related designs and paintings he also busied himself designing and realizing this monument.
According to the narrative, he made a clay model of the enormous horse in preparation for molding and bronze casting. However, as Leonardo himself testified, this never ended up happening.
