Codex Arundel, folio 136r

Musical Can(n)on

This is a machine whose operation requires the presence of an operator (not necessarily a musician) who sets the central mechanism in motion by rotating a lever.

As the mechanism rotates, the four wooden teeth positioned on the moving gear cause plates to vibrate, emitting percussive sounds. The combined action of the four teeth produces a short four-voice polyphonic composition in the musical form of the canon.
The short tune can be repeated at will to create, for example, background music during a celebration.
