Leonardo da Vinci's Robots book+model kit
New mechanics and new automata found in codices

An extraordinary and passionate voyage of the discovery of mysteries concealed in Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings of the robot-car, the mechanical lion, the army of mechanical knights and hundreds of other machines. This book puts into practice Leonardo’s approach, allowing images to explain rather than using written descriptions. In well over 800 unpublished illustrations of manuscripts, designs and three-dimensional images, the “visual language” is applied. From in-depth studies in mechanisms and historical research emerges a new approach defined as “a multimedia archaeology of da Vinci”.

For the first time, it’s easy for anyone to build the incredible “car” Leonardo designed. This pack contains all the gears and wooden and metal parts needed to build the small-scale model (1:4) of this robot. Enjoy following the instructions that will reveal the hidden mystery of folio 812r of the Codex Atlanticus: an idea no one managed to understand in over 500 years!

The Da Vinci Code - Bestseller by Dan Brown
Is it true that a murderer is hidden in the painting of the Last Supper?

Leonardo made many preparatory studies for his painting of the Last Supper. None of these show any sign of the mysterious and “dangerous” allegories or symbolism conjured up in Brown’s novel. The study of Da Vinci’s manuscripts is fascinating and he emerges as an even greater and more mysterious figure.
The novel in question has the value of stimulating the curiosity of people who have never before had any interest in Leonardo, but such people must not be misled. The manuscripts are available to anyone who seriously wants to learn more and to study the real mysteries of this genius.

The Da Vinci Code - Bestseller by Dan Brown
Did Leonardo invent the Cryptex?

Dan Brown writes that it was Leonardo da Vinci who had the idea of this miniature combination-lock strongbox. Indeed, the illustrated edition of the book includes a page from Leonardo’s manuscripts with a mechanism that appears to be similar to the one used for the Cryptex. The drawing in question is on a page from Manuscript B, folio 33 verso, to be precise. Leonardo’s design has nothing to do with the strongbox featured in the novel and there is no trace of this mechanism in the other Codices. So the author must have invented it.

The Da Vinci Code
Bestseller by Dan Brown

This very popular bestseller has re-awakened an interest in Leonardo da Vinci all over the world.
But are we sure that everything written about Leonardo’s works is true?
The story is gripping and although it is fiction, it does refer to many real events.
Some of these references concern Leonardo and may mislead readers who may think that some or all of the material is factual.

1. Is it true that a murderer is hidden in the painting of the Last Supper?
2. Did Leonardo invent the Cryptex?

Leonardo Da Vinci

A new approach to culture

ŤOh, writer, what letters will you use to write so perfectly in its entirety the representation that figured here? Which you, for lack of noticing, write in confused manner, leave little recognition of the true nature of these things; and in describing which, you, self-deluding, believe you fully satisfy your listener, giving to speak of the representation of any bodily thing, superficially encased; I remind you, trouble yourself not with words if yet you will not speak with your eyes; or, if you would use words to demonstrate to the ears and not the eyes of men, then speak of things of substance or of nature, and concern yourself not to make things of the eyes pass through the ears, for ere long you will be far surpassed by the work of the artist”

Here is a new way for you to engage history and culture. This portal, the exhibitions, publications and everything involved in the “Leonardo3” project are the result of research activities and work carried out by L3’s founding partners, Mario Taddei and Edoardo Zanon.

Leonardo3 (L3) is an innovative media company (research laboratory, creation of exhibitions and museums; editorial, television and multi-media projects; publishing house). Our mission is to study, interpret and make our artistic and scientific heritage available and enjoyable to the general public through the use of innovative techniques. In our work, we place particular importance on three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions, hence the “3” in the name Leonardo3.

Presently, L3’s research laboratories and all our production work (physical and three-dimensional models, books, multi-media aids, documentaries, exhibitions and museums) are dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci’s work and our early results have shown a wide global interest. We made the first working prototype in the world of Leonardo’s automobile, as well as virtual and physical interpretations of around 50 ingenious machines devised by da Vinci, that have never before been brought to life.

As part of our efforts to promote the work of da Vinci, we have created a digital version of the Codex Atlanticus. Based on the original manuscripts of his most interesting work, we offer a brand-new, exclusive and high-resolution means of interacting with Leonardo. For the first time in history the Codex Atlanticus is available for the enjoyment of the general public. But the really new aspect of our product is our up-to-the minute presentation of what we have produced.

3D models of the machines spring from the images in the pages, allowing the viewer the opportunity to interact. In this way, thanks to the virtual models, it is possible to understand how the designs actually work. The original manuscripts are historic proof of Leonardo’s work but, they are of interest mainly to academic experts, whereas the general public will be fascinated by our 3D reconstructions.

L3 studies the past and creates innovative means of communication to explain and stimulate interest in it. That is why we combine physical models, three-dimensional reconstructions and interactive software. In a nutshell, we believe that edutainment is the best means to understand the past and to meet the future.

Leonardo da Vinci’s designs are unquestionably extraordinary in themselves. But it is our modern way of interpreting and popularizing them that makes them truly incredible. For the first time in 500 years we can grasp the true significance of these wonderful projects. And this is only the beginning.
